The Downstairs Loo

By iq option opzione turbo

MH downstairs loo

è possibile guadagnare con le opzioni binarie, Opzioni binarie ita

I believe that a person’s home is a representation of themself. It not only mirrors how you present yourself to the world but it is also hugely representative of the mind.

You surround yourself with things that please you and your decor, pictures and the belongings you have collected over the years become the story of your life.

If each room reflects a different part of the human psyche then there is one room in the house which shows that a little bit of madness lurks in most of us: the downstairs loo.

Over the years we have noticed a familiar pattern. It is very common for bedrooms and bathrooms to become the stylish, luxurious and tranquil getaways we all dream about, but in the little downstairs cloakroom people love to unleash their wild side. Bright tiles and paint choices bring in elaborate colour that we dare not put in the rest of the house.

Feature wallpaper introduces an added element of eccentricity, illustrated with things like world maps, flamboyant patterns or a menagerie of birds, fish and animals - the kookier the better.

I was recently given the task of decorating the little loos here at Modern Homes. We went from purely functional and utilitarian ugliness to rich colour, outlandish pattern and even a wall featuring dogs in hats, monocle wearing flamingos and beer drinking toads, (to name a few).

I don’t know what it is about these weird little compartments in our houses, and indeed our minds, but we love to express our elaborate sub-conscious. I say embrace the madness! If you feel like releasing the more peculiar, then come in and chat to us about putting something off the wall onto the wall! We are more than happy to help create a space that injects a quirky element of fun (and craziness) into your home!

This innovative oven takes the temperature out of cooking, using a “CommandWheel” instead.  You select the outcome rather than the temperature or a number in Celsius or Fahrenheit. You say you want a medium-well steak, for example, and insert the Food Sensor probe, and it will do the monitoring for you. This means you can choose a more elaborate recipe and the oven will adjust itself throughout the steps.  This oven understands the results you want, just from the words you choose- an oven that speaks your language.

We will have one of these amazing ovens in the showroom later in the year and will be hosting a workshop with AEG to showcase how it can transform your home cooking- a date will be announced soon.

An Exciting Year Ahead

By iq option opzione turbo

Urban topCASHMERE GLOSS TOBACCO OAK

An Exciting Year Ahead For Kitchen Design

It promises to be another exciting year ahead for kitchens, with new colours, textures and styles and an impressive array of expanded range content to facilitate the continuing trend for living kitchens.

Variations on the classic shaker door are still one of the most popular choices for our customers.  There is now a wider selection of doors on offer with less fussy details and a modern palette of colours that are appealing to those that live in both traditional and modern homes.

The urban/industrial look is growing in strength with metallic, concrete and mineral finishes a popular choice. Details such as exposed brick, pipes, rustic metals and minimalist furniture, can be paired with these finishes, evoking the feel of factory spaces but a softer version that looks equally at home within our domestic environment.

We have seen some interesting developments in worktops over the last year with different thicknesses becoming available and options to use matching worktops as end panels, upstands and shelving.

Storage remains important and there are so many options now to personalise storage.  We are loving the new larders that can store everything from spices and condiments to small appliances. With feature end units for magazines, baskets, open shelving and wine storage built in islands, there is a storage solution for everyone.

We are likely to see the trend for concealment in the kitchen grow next year.  Whereas before big bold appliances were on display, they are now being hidden away behind sliding doors.  Likewise a multitude of smaller appliances, such as mixers and coffee machines are also being stored behind closed doors in pantries or tambour units.

Next year we’re anticipating a rise in popularity of grey and other, neutral/earthy tones in the kitchen. Brighter colours can then be added as splashes or features, which can be changed in future without major pricing implications.

Coloured carcasses are more widely available and these allow us to coordinate or contrast within a design. Our experience is that consumers are growing braver in their kitchen design choices and looking to mix and match different styles, materials and textures.

Increasingly, each kitchen we design has its own look.  Adding statement pieces or iconic pieces of furniture to personalise a design will be more common in 2018.

If you have promised yourself your dream kitchen in 2018 then make an appointment to call in soon - we look forward to seeing you.

Customer Not Always Right

By iq option opzione turbo

TinaRileyAweb

The Customer Is Not Always Right

Read our latest blog to find out why Modern Homes breaks this golden rule in order to provide customers with the very best kitchens for their homes

I don’t know where or when the phrase “The customer is always right” was coined but I shall let you into a secret: it is not true. It is a common misconception that has, for many years, been the cornerstone of all good customer service. Millions of staff members in thousands of trades from hospitality to retail and everything in between, have had to grit their teeth whilst maintaining this ethos. On the flip-side millions of us, the consumer, have taken advantage of this age-old ideology.

Nope – it is not correct and we here at Modern Homes are not afraid to break the golden rule of consumer relations by not always letting our customers have their way. This ’topsy- turvey’ approach to business may sound counter-productive but we pride ourselves on our morals.

Put it this way: there are other companies in the same line of business that will always give the customer exactly what they want, even if this means supplying impractical, unworkable and occasionally unsafe services and products.

For example, it is a shame that a company would knowingly sell a shower screen that is impossible to fit in a bathroom to a customer, simply because they said they wanted it. Or design someone a kitchen with a hob dangerously placed tightly between two doors (think of the hazardous combination of human traffic, boiling water and pan handles sticking out) on the basis that that person likes the look of it. Or sell an older customer with progressive back problems a range oven that she would have to bend down to use, simply because she fancied that style.

These are true life scenarios that we have encountered, not just over the years but literally in the last few months. Unfortunately even well-known and reputable companies are prepared to place profit over common sense.  We are not afraid to say “No – you are not right”. We would rather be able to sleep at night!

Storage Wars in the kitchen

If your kitchen includes random and ramshackle storage, you may recognise this tale from our newest member of staff Jenny, about her mother’s kitchen.  We hope you enjoy her observations.  If it sounds familiar then why not call in and talk to us about how we can transform your kitchen storage.

They say that a goldfish will grow in size to match the proportions of the bowl it lives in.  This seems to be a metaphor for my Mother’s tendency to fill a kitchen.

When she had a tiny galley kitchen every cupboard, shelf, nook and cranny was crammed full to bursting. When we eventually got an extension on my childhood home her kitchen grew to over twice the size, yet over time she once more managed to fill every square inch of storage to capacity (and more). With the amount of mixing bowls, baking trays, cake tins and countless pots and pans she owns she could fully stock her own chain of kitchen supply superstores. This may not be a problem if she could access the back of her cupboards but the kitchen was not particularly well thought out to say the least.

With excessive amounts of equipment in a badly designed kitchen comes excessive amounts of irritation. Trying to locate a specific piece of cookware that we suspect has been at the back of a cupboard for years, becomes a virtually impossible task. Rather than beginning the search for this long lost item it is just easier to buy a new one, further perpetuating the problem.

The only benefit of badly designed kitchen storage is that it enables you to fully appreciate well thought out designs and storage solutions! Clever systems that utilise the dark forgotten depths of a corner cupboard could revolutionise my mother’s kitchen. A cantilever or pull out corner system would avoid the need to go pot-holing to find the right size cake tin. A half or three-quarter carousel system would prevent engaging in a game of jenga just to find a cheese grater.

It’s a similar tale in the food cupboards. After a much needed clearout we found, amongst other things, 4 opened bottles of ketchup, 8 opened jars of marmalade (5 of which had green fluff growing on top) and taco shells that were 18 years out of date. With a pullout pantry my mum could see the contents of her food stores, throw away pre-millennial foodstuffs and stop making her home-made penicillin.

Should my mother declutter her cupboards and install any or all of these storage solutions, offering her efficient and functional use of her space, she could re-home all her duplicates and unwanted, long forgotten stuff, creating some much needed space. And what would she do with this space? More than likely her inner goldfish would kick in and she would once more fill it to capacity, but at least she could always see, find and easily access what she was looking for!

The Hottest Trends for Kitchens This Year

It has been a great year for kitchens so far with some fantastic new colours and finishes emerging.  Take a look at this guide and learn how to tap into this year’s hottest trends.

Industrial design is a style that has grown in recent years, particularly in Scandinavia and the trend looks set to continue.  This look is characterised by details such as exposed bricks and pipes, rustic metals and minimalist furniture.  The trend is inspired by factory spaces, but a toned down version can look equally at home within our domestic environment.

As discussed in previous blogs the use of predominantly grey finishes that match with rustic themes will be an ideal options for those seeking the stripped-back, industrial look in their kitchen.

Having clutter-free worktops is an emerging interior design trend whatever make of worktop is installed!  It can open up the space of a kitchen and allows the home cook to calmly prepare their food at a clear surface. The options for cabinetry are developing to enable this layout, carrying various compartments and shelves for everything from seasoning and oils to paper towels and tea bags. Clear worktops can also create the illusion of a larger kitchen space, so for consumers with a smaller kitchen environment it’s well worth considering having a tidy-up!

Hot on the heels of grey, we’re experiencing a rise in popularity of black and white tones in the kitchen. These colours can work to varying degrees, whether it's entire cabinets, worktops or appliances, or subtle hues coming through in various details and accents such as kitchen accessories. While black and white have always been popular finishes, demand for grey surfaces of all shades, remains a key trend for 2017.

Colour can then be added as splashes of bright colour which in future can be changed without major pricing implications. Single feature walls are not as popular.  We are seeing a move towards using more creative paint finishes to add colour, the use of bands, blocks or subtle stripes that add style in a really creative way.  Using an unexpected pattern like a triangle for example is a much more creative way to add bold colour to an area, just like when you choose a great pair of shoes, a tie or special jewellery, it’s those little details that can really complete your look.

To give your décor longevity choose colours that make you feel happy , that way you will ensure that you will love them for many years to come . By picking these colours up in your accessories which you can change easily you will keep your room looking fresh and up to date!

Bath from Utopia

A step by step guide to planning your perfect bathroom

Planning a new bathroom can seem like a daunting task especially when there are so many options when it comes to showers, baths and storage - where do you start and what about the plumbing!

As with most tasks the best place to start is with research and planning.

Begin with an accurate measure of your current bathroom and note where the existing fittings are.  Next consider how it works for you now, what do you like and what would you like to change?  Also think about what would be on your ultimate wish list, there are often cost effective alternatives to what you want.

Have a look around for inspiration, in magazines, on the web and find some designs and products you like.  Take these to your local independent retailer.  You will be amazed at how competitive they can be on price and you get so much more from them in terms of design expertise and customer care.

A good bathroom designer will help you look at all alternatives, the best type of furniture for your room and lifestyle.  They can advise on the relative merits of different furniture, fitted, modular and free standing.

It is a good idea to think about how the bathroom needs to function before you consider the look and design.  There is a wealth of choice when it comes to colours and finishes of furniture and this can be thought about once you know what you want the room to offer in terms of functionality.  Your designer will add value by recommending what tiles and accessories will match your chosen furniture, ensuring a coordinated look.

Sanitaryware is next – the style will be dictated by the choices you have already made with regards to furniture.  Things can get technical when it comes to taps and showers as the water pressure available in your home needs to be taken into account - this is where some expert advice can save you making a costly mistake.

Increasingly we are seeing customers that want advice on replacing the bath with a shower.   There are many factors to take into account when making this decision.  Should you go for a modern walk in power shower or a traditional freestanding bath that could be the focal point of a room?

There are a vast selection of new products that cater for your needs, so again an independent designer that recommends from a number of different manufacturers will give you the best choices.

Bathroom tiling is now an important part of the design and not just something that is added around the bath and as a splashback to the basin.  Innovative materials offer manmade material that look and feel like natural stone, adding interest.  Colours can be introduced to complement or contrast with them, again providing individuality in designs.

Finally lighting, a well-lit bathroom will cater for tasks and create an ambiance when you want to relax. It is possible to add lighting almost anywhere now, in plinths and wall recesses as well as in the ceiling and around mirrors.

The process should be stress free and fun - why not call in and speak with one of our experienced bathroom designers and begin your journey to a perfect bathroom.

Underfloor heating 2

Electric underfloor heating explained

Underfloor heating is a luxury available to all as it can be fitted both into new-build and older properties and nearly all electrical underfloor heating systems can be fitted onto existing subfloors.

There are now many more systems available on the market using different fuel sources but electrical installations are all quick, easy and clean to install.
Retrofitting of other heating systems usually means more laborious work including removal of old floors (not just the floor finish but the whole floor), refitting of new ones and finally, installation of pipework and boilers. This again increases the overall cost of the project.

The ease of fitting an electric underfloor heating systems has allowed lots of homeowners to install a warm, comfortable and highly controllable heating in individual rooms or as a whole house heating systems.

However it is important to involve a qualified Part P certified electrician in the project to ensure that the electrical distribution is designed and carried out correctly.

Underfloor heating can be controlled with any thermostat. The increase in technology in thermostatic control systems has allowed the heating systems to work automatically without you needing to manually control them. The thermostat can learn your habits, knows when you are in and can even predict when you are coming back home, adjusting the temperature accordingly. With an app to go with the thermostat you can control the heating in your home from a remote location. A smart thermostat does not only increase the overall comfort but decreases energy usage, as your heating is on for less time and only when you need it, leading to cost savings.

There is a wide range of underfloor systems available for different floor coverings as well as subfloor types including concrete, stone, and engineered woods. For all floor types, it is advisable to ensure adequate subfloor insulation when considering retrofitting an underfloor heating system. Subfloor insulation can be installed effortlessly using insulation boards which have excellent insulation qualities. All ranges include insulation boards for different needs of insulation.

There is no need to be concerned about the floor heights, as the insulation board for concrete floors is only 10mm thick and for wooden floors 6mm thick. Although insulation is not a prerequisite, it is recommended to ensure heat is directed upwards and not into the subfloor. Good insulation decreases the heat up time and ensures the system is as efficient as possible.

When tiling or laying stone floors, it is always important to ensure the floor is sturdy and free from flexing, regardless of installation of an underfloor heating system. If in doubt, the floor might require additional strengthening of a quality plywood or other appropriate material.

Finally, electric underfloor heating does not require any maintenance unlike conventional heating systems ran by boilers. Therefore it is a secure and cost-efficient heating system that lasts for a lifetime whilst keeping your toes warm and cosy.

New Season's Neutrals

By iq option opzione turbo

gallery-1473231020-dulux-colour-futures-17-new-romanticism-kitchen cp

New Season's Neutrals

When discussing colour schemes with clients the word neutral often crops up in conversation and can often be mistaken by a client to mean a safe design choice or a boring colour, however I firmly believe they can make a statement in their own right.

A neutral colour can provide its own unique energy and can lift an interior to create a tranquil atmosphere. By choosing similar colours but contrasting prints and or patterns this can create a stimulating visual effect that will stay classic and not date.

Let us consider how we can personalise your colour scheme by adding metallic accents or natural materials which will instantly add a feeling of warmth.

Try twinning some pale colours with a strong feature colour, think pale blue combined with silver, or grey combined with chocolate, the combinations are endless.

Cherished Gold and Rose Quartz were both colours of the year in 2016 and remain popular for neutral colour schemes this year. The colours of the year for 2017 have moved on to a natural theme with beautiful blues and greens in Denim Drift from Dulux and Greenery from PANTONE,  a natural  neutral, that lends itself to many colour combinations.

As metallics continue to add that feel good factor into our homes, the earthy golds from last year and new naturals from this year complement them well, offering a touch of glamour in an authentic and personal way.

We have lots of colours on display in the showroom and a huge selection of doors so why not call in and discover your perfect colour scheme.

How To Buy Your New Kitchen

By iq option opzione turbo

How to Buy Your New Kitchen

The Downstairs Loo

By iq option opzione turbo

MH downstairs loo

The Psychology of the Downstairs Loo

An Exciting Year Ahead
