A Modern Light Kitchen

A Modern Light Kitchen

Replacing tired, out-dated kitchens for new modern and light-filled spaces is something that we do every day but it never becomes ordinary, as it is always a joy to see how customers love their new kitchens.

This was the case with Sue Harrison, a local landscape architect and super ultra runner with an amazing collection of medals and titles from running, not just in the UK but around the world.

Sue is typical of many of our customers in that she manages a very busy life and wanted a company to provide a stress and hassle free service, transforming her kitchen into a beautiful and functional space.

We designed a kitchen that makes the most of the space and provides the extra storage that Sue requested.  The doors are a clean shaker style, light in colour and teamed with accents of colour in the wall tiles, splashbacks and blinds.

“I changed everything when the kitchen was re-designed,” says Sue. “It was very much out with the old and in with the new.  I love everything about the new kitchen, the colour scheme, the gorgeous tall cupboards and the modern extractor fan.

“The solid surface worktop with integral drainer grooves is also fabulous, it makes the whole kitchen flow rather than look disjointed.”

Sue spoke to a number of local companies before selecting Modern Homes having been impressed with how friendly and knowledgeable the team was from the outset.  “The whole process went well, from lots of suggestions of how to create what I wanted at the outset to the guys that fitted being clean and tidy.

“One of the reasons I chose Modern Homes was that I liked the idea of using a local, family run business rather than a national 'chain'  and I am so glad I did,” says Sue.

Sue is so pleased with her kitchen, we are already designing a new bathroom for her home, a happy customer indeed!

On a Winning Streak

Winning Streak for Modern Homes

It’s been a fantastic year for us with regard to recognition and awards, proving we’re definitely not only pleasing our customers, but making waves in business circles too!

Earlier this year Tina was shortlisted for The FSB Expert in Business Awards – open to all businesses based in Warwickshire, Coventry and Solihull. With such a wide spread of businesses to choose from, being selected as one of only three finalists was a fantastic achievement!

In addition to this, Tina also won an award in the ‘Business Growth’ category at the ‘Women Who’ awards on 5th September 2017. This was a glamorous affair covering multiple categories, but each one had in common inspirational women at the core, who are changing the landscape.

Now Tina and the business has been nominated again, for the ‘Family Business Entrepreneur of the Year’ category at the 2017 NatWest Great British Entrepreneur Awards!

The organisers said, “We’ve been overwhelmed with the quality of entries received this year so you should be very proud, you’ve already beaten off some very, very stiff competition.”

The organisers will be sharing the news from Monday 11th September, so expect to see our name out there very shortly, fingers crossed for another win before the end of the year.

Customer Not Always Right

TinaRileyAweb

The Customer Is Not Always Right

tredaing binarie Read our latest blog to find out why Modern Homes breaks this golden rule in order to provide customers with the very best kitchens for their homes

I don’t know where or when the phrase “The customer is always right” was coined but I shall let you into a secret: it is not true. It is a common misconception that has, for many years, been the cornerstone of all good customer service. Millions of staff members in thousands of trades from hospitality to retail and everything in between, have had to grit their teeth whilst maintaining this ethos. On the flip-side millions of us, the consumer, have taken advantage of this age-old ideology.

Nope – it is not correct and we here at Modern Homes are not afraid to break the golden rule of consumer relations by not always letting our customers have their way. This ’topsy- turvey’ approach to business may sound counter-productive but we pride ourselves on our morals.

Put it this way: there are other companies in the same line of business that will always give the customer exactly what they want, even if this means supplying impractical, unworkable and occasionally unsafe services and products.

For example, it is a shame that a company would knowingly sell a shower screen that is impossible to fit in a bathroom to a customer, simply because they said they wanted it. Or design someone a kitchen with a hob dangerously placed tightly between two doors (think of the hazardous combination of human traffic, boiling water and pan handles sticking out) on the basis that that person likes the look of it. Or sell an older customer with progressive back problems a range oven that she would have to bend down to use, simply because she fancied that style.

These are true life scenarios that we have encountered, not just over the years but literally in the last few months. Unfortunately even well-known and reputable companies are prepared to place profit over common sense.  We are not afraid to say “No – you are not right”. We would rather be able to sleep at night!

Introducing Our New Installer

FitterSimoncropweb1

Introducing Simon Our New Installer

Modern Homes are pleased to introduce our lead bathroom installer Simon.

We were thrilled when Simon joined our team in January of this year with his vast experience gained over 24 years within the industry.

He has quickly settled in and has become an important part of our team and has even managed to persuade Tina to sort out the warehouse, which, according to some, is no mean feat!

He has also proved popular with our customers judging by the many thank you letters from happy clients that are already pinned on our showroom board.

With four children and a busy job his spare time is very limited however he does enjoy ‘trying’ to keep fit (his words) including running, cycling and triathlons. He has completed many cycling challenges, which he has organised himself, including cycling from coast to coast at the thinnest, widest and longest points of Great Britain and cycling between 5 countries, 5 capital cities in 5 days. Whilst doing these challenges Simon has raised over £25,000 for various charities.

Bright Galley Kitchen

A Light, Open And Bright Galley Kitchen

The joy of single living, is the ability to choose exactly what you want when it comes to your home and that’s what Susanne Waugh did when she called us in to revamp her kitchen.

Susanne’s home is a traditional semi-detached in Coventry, with a galley kitchen. Within the confines of this type of layout, she wanted it to be modern and uncluttered, with light colours to make it look as timeless and bright as possible.

With a neutral palette of colours, the kitchen opens out onto the garden, providing an open and airy feel to the space.

She had excellent ideas and we worked very closely to Susanne’s specifications, with an end result to be proud of – and now Susanne is more than happy to polish her beautiful glass splashback and work surfaces on a regular basis.

“I had the kitchen done a couple of years ago,” says Susanne, “but I still love it just as much as I did when it was installed. Modern Homes got the brief perfectly and were on hand to oversee every little detail. The workmen were excellent too – and I really couldn’t fault the entire process.”

Natural Look For Relaxed Living

Bridgwater Dark Sage and Prosecco web

A New Natural Look For Relaxed Easy Living

The natural look is still one of the most popular styles in kitchen design and the latest kitchen from Mereway captures the theme of relaxed easy living perfectly.

Unmistakably British, the new Bridgwater range has everything you would expect in a modern but classic kitchen and more.

With a wealth of range content to choose from this is a kitchen that is very much at the heart of the home, individually designed, each and every time.

The painted woodgrain shaker door has a simple bevelled panel that has less detailing than a traditional shaker panel and is available in 25 stunning colours from Chalk White to Plum.  The kitchen pictured here in Dark Sage and Prosecco takes influences from the ‘greenery’ trend to create a relaxed open space.

As you would expect from Mereway’s Town & Country collection, this kitchen incorporates contemporary design features such as the open shelving and magazine rack in the island.  The floating breakfast bar with Grey Bardolino UrbanTop adds a fresh twist and provides a social area at the heart of this kitchen, designed for modern day living.

This kitchen also includes a new larder corner unit, with cantilever carousels, offering added innovative storage solutions.

So if you are seeking a natural look and true individuality then why not visit us today and start planning your dream kitchen.

Storage Wars in the kitchen

Bridgwater storage web

Storage Wars in the kitchen

If your kitchen includes random and ramshackle storage, you may recognise this tale from our newest member of staff Jenny, about her mother’s kitchen.  We hope you enjoy her observations.  If it sounds familiar then why not call in and talk to us about how we can transform your kitchen storage.

They say that a goldfish will grow in size to match the proportions of the bowl it lives in.  This seems to be a metaphor for my Mother’s tendency to fill a kitchen.

When she had a tiny galley kitchen every cupboard, shelf, nook and cranny was crammed full to bursting. When we eventually got an extension on my childhood home her kitchen grew to over twice the size, yet over time she once more managed to fill every square inch of storage to capacity (and more). With the amount of mixing bowls, baking trays, cake tins and countless pots and pans she owns she could fully stock her own chain of kitchen supply superstores. This may not be a problem if she could access the back of her cupboards but the kitchen was not particularly well thought out to say the least.

With excessive amounts of equipment in a badly designed kitchen comes excessive amounts of irritation. Trying to locate a specific piece of cookware that we suspect has been at the back of a cupboard for years, becomes a virtually impossible task. Rather than beginning the search for this long lost item it is just easier to buy a new one, further perpetuating the problem.

The only benefit of badly designed kitchen storage is that it enables you to fully appreciate well thought out designs and storage solutions! Clever systems that utilise the dark forgotten depths of a corner cupboard could revolutionise my mother’s kitchen. A cantilever or pull out corner system would avoid the need to go pot-holing to find the right size cake tin. A half or three-quarter carousel system would prevent engaging in a game of jenga just to find a cheese grater.

It’s a similar tale in the food cupboards. After a much needed clearout we found, amongst other things, 4 opened bottles of ketchup, 8 opened jars of marmalade (5 of which had green fluff growing on top) and taco shells that were 18 years out of date. With a pullout pantry my mum could see the contents of her food stores, throw away pre-millennial foodstuffs and stop making her home-made penicillin.

Should my mother declutter her cupboards and install any or all of these storage solutions, offering her efficient and functional use of her space, she could re-home all her duplicates and unwanted, long forgotten stuff, creating some much needed space. And what would she do with this space? More than likely her inner goldfish would kick in and she would once more fill it to capacity, but at least she could always see, find and easily access what she was looking for!
